Who We Are

Nest Quantum was built by a small team with backgrounds in residential construction, cost estimating, and software development. Between us, we have helped plan and budget hundreds of home improvement projects — from single-room paint jobs to full basement conversions — and we kept running into the same problem: the calculators online were either too simple to be useful or buried behind accounts and paywalls.

We built Nest Quantum to fix that. Every tool on this site reflects real project experience: the kind of knowledge that comes from standing in a hardware store aisle, calculating square footage on a phone, and knowing from experience that a 10% waste factor is the difference between finishing the job and making a second trip.

Our team includes people who have worked directly with professional estimators, contractors, and building suppliers. We know what the formulas look like on a real project takeoff sheet — and we built those same formulas into every calculator here.

Our Mission

Accurate planning saves money, time, and frustration. Buying 15% too much concrete means paying for bags you will never open. Buying 10% too little paint means stopping mid-wall for an emergency store run. Our mission is to give every homeowner, renter, contractor, and landscaper the same planning tools that professionals use — free, instant, and without any account required.

We want Nest Quantum to be the first place you go before any project, whether you are estimating mulch for a weekend garden bed or budgeting a full kitchen remodel. Every one of our 60+ calculators is designed to answer a real planning question with a real, usable answer.

How We Build Our Calculators

Each calculator starts with a practical question — the kind of question a homeowner asks before a project, not after. We research the industry-standard formula for that question, trace it back to primary sources (manufacturer specifications, trade associations, building codes, government agencies), and then validate the formula against real-world examples.

Every calculator on this site includes:

• The formula in plain language, so you understand exactly how the number was calculated.
• A worked example, so you can verify the result against a known scenario.
• Configurable inputs, so you can adjust for your specific materials, coverage rates, and waste tolerance.
• A waste or contingency factor, because real projects never go exactly to plan.
• Honest limitations, including when a calculator estimate should be checked against a product label, local supplier, or licensed professional.

We review our formulas, defaults, and explanations regularly. When we find an error or receive a correction from a user, we update the calculator and note the change.

Our Standards for Accuracy

We hold ourselves to the same standard a professional estimator would: every default value needs a source, every formula needs a reference, and every result needs to be explainable. That means:

• Paint coverage defaults are based on industry-average figures from major paint manufacturers (350 sq ft/gal for finish coats, 300 sq ft/gal for primer).
• Concrete bag yields match Portland Cement Association and manufacturer specifications (40 lb = 0.30 cu ft, 60 lb = 0.45 cu ft, 80 lb = 0.60 cu ft).
• Energy estimates reference U.S. Department of Energy and ENERGY STAR data for appliance efficiency, utility rates, and upgrade payback periods.
• Safety guidance on pages involving lead paint, ventilation, or chemical disposal links to EPA and OSHA publications.
• Cost ranges are national averages reviewed periodically and presented as ranges, not fixed prices, because local labor and material costs vary.

We do not manufacture numbers. If a default value comes from a manufacturer spec, we say so. If an estimate is sensitive to local conditions, we say that too.

What Makes Nest Quantum Different
